The first Estonian Rural Life Development Report published
The first Estonian Rural Life Development Report was published at the Rural Forum on Tuesday, November 8. The report elaborates on the changes in the rural life during the past decades and presents important solutions for future policies.
According to Rando Värnik, the director of EMÜ Institute of Economics and Social Sciences, the report may be compared to the Human Development Report. Although in the study he looked into the development of rural life in the past, the main question is: what will happen next?
"A very important accomplishment of the report is that it divides the rural areas of Estonia into six categories, two of which are more urban and four more rural by character. We also measured their development based on the Rural Life Development Index. The purpose was not to form a list, rather than approach the ways to develop small regions based on the particular character of the area," Värnik said.
The first chapter of the Rural Life Development Report contains information about terminology, views and values. The second chapter gives an overview of the development of Estonian rural life at the regional level, it also provides the results of measuring them using the Rural Life Development Index. In the third section the importance of urban centres is analysed in the context of work and education. The fourth chapter gives an overview of the past 20 years in the Estonian agriculture.
The Rural Life Development Report was written in the EMÜ Institute of Economics and Social Sciences.
It is available in the Estonian language - see here.
