International course concentrated on animal welfare

On March 16 to 20 a BOVA Intensive Master Course “Practical Comparative Animal Welfare Assessment” took place at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

Intent of the course was to provide students at Master’s level with the confidence and competence to assess the welfare of animals kept by humans. As this was a practical course, students engaged in assessing the welfare of real animals in real contexts, such as captive animal sites for example. Main focus of the course was on animal welfare concepts, assessment of welfare, animal welfare in different contexts, animal behavior and welfare.

The course was leaded by Prof. David Arney from Department of Nutrition. Teaching team included Jaakko Mononen from University of Eastern Finland, Lena Lidfors from Swedish University of Life Sciences, Allan Kaasik, David Arney, Marko Kass, Ragnar Leming, Tiia Ariko from Estonian University of Life Sciences, Lilija Degola, Elita Aplocina from Latvia University of Agriculture and Maria Serrapica from University Basilicata (Italy).
