Alar Karis, Chairman of the Council of Estonian University of Life Sciences, was elected President of the Republic of Estonia

On Tuesday, the Riigikogu elected Alar Karis, the chairman of the council of Estonian University of Life Sciences and the current head of the Estonian National Museum, as the next president of Estonia.

Karis, who needed 68 votes in favor, received 72 votes. In the first round of elections Karis received 63 votes in favor, was missing five votes to become president. Alar Karis is an alumnus and former rector of Estonian University of Life Sciences (2003-2007). After that, he was elected Rector of University of Tartu (2007-2012). In addition to Arnold Rüütel, Karis is the second former rector of Estonian University of Life Sciences, who has become the President of the Republic of Estonia.
