The International Bioprocessing Association (IBA-IFIBiop) has awarded Professor Lisandra Meneses the Young Scientist Award for 2023–2024 in recognition of her outstanding scientific achievements and significant contributions to the fields of waste valorization and the circular economy. The award was officially announced during the opening session of the XI IBA Conference, held in Hong Kong from December 1–4, 2024 (conference details here).
The IBA Forum aims to advance research and development in biotechnology and bioengineering, including food biotechnology, energy, and environmental technologies. It fosters collaboration between academic institutions and industry, supports problem-solving for industrial challenges, and promotes the dissemination of knowledge through lectures, seminars, and symposia. IBA recognizes its members’ exceptional contributions through awards such as the Lifetime Achievement Award, Young Scientist Award, Outstanding Scientist Award, and Pandey Research Excellence Award. The organization also honors non-members with Honorary Fellowships for cross-disciplinary research excellence.
Professor Lisandra Meneses, a visiting professor at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, specializes in biotechnology and has an extensive international career. She has worked in Poland, Estonia, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Sweden, Australia, Ireland, and Angola. Her research focuses on valorizing sidestreams using circular economy principles, and she has authored numerous publications in this area.
In 2024, Professor Meneses was recognized as one of the 60 most impactful women in the Middle East for sustainability, climate innovation, and leadership by the Boston Consulting Group’s BCG V60 Awards. She is also a recipient of the 2020 L’Oréal Baltic Program’s “Women in Science” Young Talent Award for Estonia.
