Estonian University of Life Sciences is Among the Environmentally Sustainable Universities

The Estonian University of Life Sciences ranked 716th in the GreenMetric ranking for environmental sustainability in 2024. This places the university among the top 48% of universities worldwide, compared to last year's position in the top 50%.

Sille Rebane, the head of the Estonian University of Life Sciences' Green University Strategy, hopes that the new development plan will further improve the university's position. "We are doing well in areas like waste management, education, and research, but work is needed in energy and smart solutions. The new development plan, which will bring significant changes, could offer relief," said Rebane.

The GreenMetric methodology evaluates universities based on environmental, economic, and social values. For instance, university campuses are assessed on various aspects, including climate-smart solutions in buildings, green and recreational areas, accessibility, and safety. Attention is also given to sustainability-focused study programs, events, and research.

The GreenMetric ranking has been compiled for universities since 2010, with the Estonian University of Life Sciences participating since 2019. Wageningen University in the Netherlands was ranked the most sustainable university in the world in 2024. The ranking sees new universities joining each year; in 2024, a total of 1,477 universities participated worldwide, 294 more than the previous year. Estonia is also represented in the GreenMetric ranking by the Estonian Academy of Arts, which ranked 1,242nd.
