The symbolism of the Estonian University of Life Sciences and its use

In 2005, the Estonian University of Life Sciences received a new logo with a new name. The name Estonian University of Life Sciences (EMÜ) reflects the new direction of the university - to offer education in life sciences, biotechnology and genetic engineering and environmental sciences in addition to traditional agricultural sciences. The EMÜ logo consists of a symbol and text (Estonian and English name), which forms one whole. The Estonian University of Life Sciences is not a direct translation of the name of Eesti Maaülikool, but rather a description of the university in English.

The symbol of logo is a spiral that has long marked the goddess, fertility, constant change, and the evolution of the universe. To reflect the life sciences, the spiral is designed to resemble a plant sprouting from a seed. The spiral is a dynamic shape and the strong lines of the symbol adds depth and energy to it. Around the symbol is a green surface that curves at the top - a reference to the globe and the environment - as if to emerge from its space, which is a reference to the university's efforts to extend beyond Estonia and its role in the international research community. At the same time, everyone can interpret the symbol differently for themselves - spiral, leaflet, etc.
