On May 8th, the international conference "Biosystems Engineering" will commence at the Estonian University of Life Sciences' Technology Building to present advancements in biosystem technologies and promote international research collaboration.

This year, the FoodBalt 2024 conference will also take place concurrently, focusing on sustainable food production as a challenge within the production chain.

The main themes of the conference include smart agriculture, future food systems, occupational safety in agriculture, and technological innovations contributing to sustainable food production. Timo Kikas, the main organizer and professor at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, stated that science can only progress through effective communication. "Without sharing research results and extensive discussion, no discovery can reach its true value, no matter how brilliant the idea. Therefore, organizing conferences like these is extremely necessary to foster broad discussions and share scientific discoveries," said Kikas.

The conference will feature presentations by top scientists from around the world. Professor Jiří Mašek from the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague will discuss smart agriculture as the new era of farming. Dr. Galina Brychkova from University of Galway will introduce the application of 3D food printing and nanoparticle sorting for sustainable snacks. Professor Eldon R. Rene from the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education will talk about assessing the viability of transforming existing industrial zones in Nigeria into environmentally friendly industrial parks, and Professor Mohammad Taherzadeh from University of Borås will introduce a mushroom-based biorefinery and how to turn waste into value-added products.

From the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Professor Rajeev Bhat will present on the topic of future food systems, discussing trends, innovation, opportunities, challenges, and priorities, while Professor Eda Merisalu will introduce methods of preventing workplace risks in agriculture.

Approximately 25 guests from various countries will attend the conference.

On the final day of the conference, May 10th, foreign guests will participate in excursions to KODASe Cider House in Põlvamaa and the Promens plastic factory in Rõngu.

The Estonian University of Life Sciences has been organizing the "Biosystems Engineering" conference for the 14th time. Interested individuals can attend the presentations in person, as there will be no live stream of the conference. Most participants are from Europe and other countries, making English the working language of the conference. The main organizer of the conference is the Institute of Forestry and Engineering at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
