Requirements of form for PhD thesis

REQUIREMENTS OF FORM FOR DOCTORAL THESES


Directive no 1-8/25 of 26 November 2014 of the Rector

 

Taking into account the 29 May 2014 regulation of the Council of the Estonian University of Life Sciences no 1-5/8 „Conditions and Procedure for Awarding Doctorates“, I hereby establish the requirements of form for doctoral theses.

 

1. Technical data of the publication
1.1. Format: 167×240 mm.
1.2. Adhesive binding.
1.3. Cover paper: Cyclus Offset 250 gr.
1.4. Textblock paper: Cyclus Offset 90 gr.
1.5. Cover printing ink number: p. 7427.
1.6. Textblock printing ink number: p. 627.
1.7. The print run shall be determined in the written order. The miinimum print run is 50, the compulsory copies shall be deducted from the print run (8 copies), a PDF file shall be published on the website of the library of the Estonian University of Life Sciences (except when there are legal reasons or special cases preventing publishing) at least two weeks before the defence and submitted to the library through the link http://library.emu.ee/loputoo_saatmine at least three days before the defence, whereas the title of the file must include the author’s given name and surname and the name of their home institute.

 

2. Design requirements
2.1. Layout area of text, text characteristics (annex 1):
2.1.1. body text: AGaramond 12 pt, line spacing 14 pt, alignment justified;
2.1.2. footnote text: AGaramond 9 pt, line spacing 11 pt, alignment justified;
2.1.3. explanatory text of tables and figures: AGaramond 10 pt, line spacing 12 pt,
alignment justified, text can be in bold or italic where appropriate;
2.1.4. size of text frame 117×200.
2.2. The cover shall feature the university logo, the title of the doctoral thesis in the original language and a translation into Estonian or English, the given name and surname of the author of the thesis, the name of the degree to be applied for in Estonian and English, the place and year of defending the thesis. The spine shall feature the name of the author of the doctoral thesis and the title of the thesis in the original language (annex 2).
2.3. The upper margin of the flyleaf shall feature the name of the series in Estonian and English: Eesti Maaülikooli doktoritööd;

2.4. The reverse side of the flyleaf shall be empty.
2.5. The title page shall copy the cover.
2.6. The reverse of the title page shall feature the name of the structural unit, the place of completion of the doctoral thesis, reference to the defence board's decision regarding the referral of the thesis to defence, the name(s) and institution(s) of opponent(s), the name(s) and institution(s) of supervisor(s), name(s) of editor(s), the date, place and time of defence; ISSN and ISBN number. The text on the reverse of the title page shall be in the same language as the doctoral thesis (annex 4).
2.7. The back cover shall feature a list of the last five doctoral theses defended in the Estonian University of Life Sciences (author, title of thesis, supervisor(s) of thesis, time of defence) ISSN and ISBN number (annex 6).
2.8. Title levels, fonts, sizes:
2.8.1. first level title: AGaramond bold 14 pt, line spacing 16 pt, alignment centred;
2.8.2. subtitle: AGaramond bold 12 pt, line spacing 14 pt, alignment centred.
2.9. Subdivision. Paragraphs shall be separated by an empty line.
2.10. Figures, design samples (annex 1).
2.11. Design samples for clauses 2.1; 2.5; 2.6; 2.7.; 2.8 have been presented in  annex 1.
2.12. Referencing will be done in accordance with the referencing system accepted in the field of research.

 

3. Requirement for the materials to be submitted to the printing house
3.1. The material of the doctoral thesis shall be submitted as a single document (a Word file is suitable), figures shall be submitted as a Word or Excel file.
3.2. The location of the figures in the file should be between the texts exactly according to the actual publication.
3.3. The text shall be in the file(s) in the order foreseen in the publication according to the requirements of form for doctoral theses.
3.4. Photos shall be submitted as photos, slides or digital photographs. The picture material shall be numbered, captions added, and location in the thesis indicated.
3.5. Links shall be in the same style as the text, not as hyperlinks.
3.6. An unfinished manuscript shall not be accepted.

3.8. The level of the titles shall be indicated in numbers pursuant to the decimal system.

 

4. Printing requirements
4.1. The doctoral thesis shall be printed as a Green Print, only on re-used or certified paper and in ink based on natural nontoxic raw material.
4.3. The Green Print marking shall be located at the centre of the lower third of the back cover together with the text "Printed on recycled paper with inks made from natural oils and resins".

 

5. I hereby repeal the Rector’s directive no 1 from 12 January 2009.

 

6.  The directive shall enter into force upon notification.
