On the last day of October, the American Ambassador to Estonia, George P. Gent, visited the Estonian University of Life Sciences, to meet with representatives of the university and to open a lecture on sustainable agricultural policy.
During the meeting at the rector's office, members of the university family discussed with the ambassador global topics, from climate change and food security to plant breeding and forestry. George P. Gent was keenly interested in the role of the university in Estonian society and was interested in the university's research achievements and services in the field of green and circular economy.
Among other things, there was talk about horticultural breeding, how to find new varieties against pests and diseases caused by climate change, in order to ensure food security. The question of what our forests will look like in the future was also discussed, because the future fate of several tree species is no longer certain due to the changed climate conditions. Strategic solutions are needed, and the Estonian University of Life Sciences undoubtedly plays an important role in finding these solutions, it was noted at the meeting.
