Calculating the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Footprint is important because it enables the university and companies more broadly to analyze and understand the total amount of GHG emissions resulting from their activities. It also allows them to identify opportunities for reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability.
The Estonian University of Life Sciences (EMÜ) decided to start calculating its GHG footprint in 2023, taking 2022 as the baseline year. During the calculation process, EMÜ’s GHG emissions and sequestration for the year 2022 were examined. Additionally, the sources of various data were reviewed, and an analysis was made of how more accurate data could be obtained in the future. The purpose of the footprint assessment is to provide valuable information for making EMÜ’s activities more environmentally friendly. The baseline year results are now available, and a summary has been prepared. A new summary will be produced and uploaded here annually.
In autumn 2025, the development of an action plan to reduce the carbon footprint was initiated. Based on preliminary results, the direct emissions (Scope 1) of the Estonian University of Life Sciences amounted to 181.35 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), while indirect energy-related emissions (Scope 2) were 3,635.12 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e). More detailed results, along with additional information, will be published on this website in the near future.
