Contribution to national development

The foundation of societal development lies in educated individuals who, with their knowledge and entrepreneurship, promote the economy, use our natural resources sustainably, and preserve and develop our mother tongue and culture. Alongside traditional education and research, the role of universities as centers for innovation, collaboration, and societal impact has become increasingly important.

Thanks to their research potential, universities are one of the key players in solving major societal challenges and providing innovative solutions for businesses. In 2023, the Estonian University of Life Sciences signed over 150 research and development cooperation agreements with companies.

The Estonian University of Life Sciences is a knowledge center for circular bioeconomy. We are pioneers in how to sustainably use renewable and non-renewable natural resources through technologies and new methodologies for producing food, energy, materials, and products, as well as developing services. We have the knowledge to manage natural resources sustainably across the entire value chain.

With our knowledge, we can contribute to preserving and creating a good living environment both in cities and rural areas. Regional development and supporting people's livelihoods in rural areas are our core focus. We share our knowledge with society through knowledge transfer and education.

University as a partner

The university's impact and contribution are amplified through collaboration with strong partners in the public, non-profit, and business sectors.

The Estonian University of Life Sciences is a member of the Estonian Employers' Confederation, the Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce, the Estonian Association for Quality, and the Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association. We have close cooperation with the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture, the Ministry of Climate, and many other state institutions. We are one of the creators of the Tartu Science Park and the founders of BioCC.

The international dimension of our education and research work is enhanced by active cooperation with foreign universities, research institutions, and companies. Read more about the international networks the university is a part of.

We consider it important to support sustainable initiatives and, since 2023, we have awarded the Green Step Award to recognize them.

We recognize our important partners who provide internship opportunities, support students with scholarships, participate in applied research and development work, and help connect the university and society more closely through their activities

We need to contribute to the development of Estonia. This can happen through meaningful research and development collaboration, as well as knowledge transfer, which are prerequisites for the commercialization of new innovative knowledge.

We have a clear interest and desire to contribute even more to entrepreneurship.

We can provide the most modern and best knowledge and skills for the benefit of businesses. Our uniqueness lies in biological resources – at the university, we also examine socio-economic processes through this prism. We must use big data and digital services to help companies create better services

Contribution to society through knowledge transfer and innovation

Against the backdrop of economic downturn, agriculture and forestry have consistently been positive contributors to the Estonian economy in 2024 and prior years. The Estonian University of Life Sciences is the best partner in these fields as a creator and transmitter of new knowledge.

We help businesses, as well as the public and non-profit sectors, create science-based, environmentally sustainable practical solutions by offering expert knowledge in agriculture, food production and processing, environment, forestry, engineering and technology, and rural development.

The university participates in large-scale knowledge transfer programs such as the Agricultural Knowledge Transfer Program (AKIS) and others, organizing information days, study circles, and various research and development activities

Contribution to society through education

Lifelong learning is becoming standard practice. Gone are the days when one education was obtained and the same job was held for the rest of one's life. To adapt to a changing world, acquiring new skills is essential. Flexible learning formats and methods make it possible for anyone interested to gain knowledge in small, accessible chunks.

The OSKA labor force demand reports confirm a strong need for workers in many fields of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, making our graduates highly sought after on the job market. Our alumni make a significant contribution to the advancement of life in Estonia.

The Estonian University of Life Sciences is a top university: we are ranked 45th in the world among universities providing education in agriculture and forestry. Our study programs are modern and meet the needs of the labor market. Our education is closely integrated with specialized research in the field.
