Energy Saving

Energy saving at the Estonian University of Life Sciences is mainly linked to the Faculty of Engineering and the Energy Class, who among other things, research ways to use energy more efficiently.

So far, the Energy Class has mapped the electricity consumption of EMÜ’s main building and identified possible energy-saving solutions. Timers have been installed on the printers and water dispensers on the ground floor of the main building, which switch off the devices during nights and weekends to save energy. Energy-saving opportunities are being reviewed across the entire campus.

After the completion of the new Faculty of Engineering building, continuous energy consumption monitoring was started there, and the plan is to develop the best solutions for everyday energy saving on an ongoing basis. The Faculty of Engineering has also prepared an energy consumption report comparing energy use before and after renovation. The report was completed at the end of 2012. Additionally, read recommendations on how to save energy both at work and at home.

Every employee of the University can easily save energy by following these steps:

  • Turning off the power supply of computers, monitors, and printers daily does not produce the expected individual results. It is rather better to leave the devices in standby mode when not in use, for example by turning them off when going on vacation.
  • It is important to ensure that any electrical device that consumes power but is not needed should not be running for extended periods.
  • Use a single printer for multiple people and keep it switched on only when needed.
  • Naturally, turn off the lights when leaving a room.
