A Walk Through the History of Agricultural Higher Education

Higher agricultural education in Estonia has a long and eventful history. The institution that has been known as the Estonian University of Life Sciences since 2005 has evolved through several stages over more than a century and a half. Founded in 1848, the Tartu Veterinary School maintained close ties with the University of Tartu, and from 1919 to 1951 both veterinary medicine and agricultural sciences were taught within the University of Tartu.

Established in 1951, the Estonian Agricultural Academy (EPA) became one of Estonia's leading institutions of higher education, reflecting the rapid development of collective and state farming during the Soviet era. In 1991, it was renamed the Estonian Agricultural University, before adopting its current name in 2005.

Science historian Erki Tammiksaar will guide participants through the University's history by visiting the buildings where higher agricultural education in Tartu has developed over the decades.

The tour lasts approximately two hours. We will meet at the von Bock (Marx) House (Ülikooli 16) and then continue by bus to several locations across the city, making stops along the way.

Please note that the tour will take place only if at least 10 participants have registered.
