Today were announced the results of the small animal clinic design competition organized by the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences at the Estonian University of Life Sciences . First and third prizes went to the architectural firm Arhitekt Must OÜ for their works "Reflection" and "City." Second prize went to OÜ Kolm Pluss Üks for their competition entry "Ositi."
An incentive prize was awarded to Lauder Architects SIA and Weidenberg OÜ for their work "Hemisphere."
Jury secretary Tiit Sild said that all 12 entries submitted to the competition were of a very high standard, so although the jury had some disagreements, it was still good to be able to choose from among such strong entries. The decision took into account the wishes of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, which were already included in the competition conditions, that the building to be constructed would be of symbolic importance in the urban space for those arriving in the city from Tallinn, would fit in with the existing buildings of the university, would be modern, and would meet the needs of the university.
The jury highlighted the excellent composition of the winning entry, "Reflection." In addition to being visually striking, it is also highly functional and easy for employees to use.
One of the authors of the winning entry, Rasmus Pikk from the Arhitekt Must office, said that the small animal clinic design competition was a very exciting task for their team, which is why they submitted two entries to the competition. The starting point for "Reflection" was to focus on the environment rather than the building itself. Naturally, they wanted to create a comfortable space for employees and students, and two inner courtyards were designed for this purpose. The name of the work was derived from the slightly reflective material used in it, which reflects the surrounding landscape. According to Rasmus Pika, they are now eagerly awaiting the next stage of the design process.
The chairman of the jury, Toomas Tiirats, recalled that the development of the veterinary medicine and animal husbandry study complex fell between two eras. At the end of the Soviet era, there were plans to build another building for veterinary medicine on the university campus, similar in size to the one where the institute operates today. The current building was intended only as a large animal clinic. However, it was never built. The institute has a severe shortage of space, and the interim extensions and renovations have not alleviated this. Therefore, it was decided to build a completely new building in addition to the existing one, rather than just expanding it. The institute is eagerly awaiting the completion of the new building.
