Estonian University of Life Sciences Student Wins 3rd Place in International Thesis Competition

This international competition recognises outstanding undergraduate theses in animal science from universities in the UK and beyond.

Her thesis, titled "Impact of Noise on European Mink (Mustela lutreola) Behaviour", impressed the judging panel with its scientific rigour and the relevance of its subject matter. The study explores how environmental noise may affect the behaviour of the critically endangered European mink. The bachelor's thesis was supervised by Professor David Richard Arney from the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Research Fellow Kairi Kiik from the University of Tartu, and PhD Student Kristel Nemvalts from the University of Tartu. 

The results of the study show that human-generated noise from public events affects the behaviour and activity of the endangered European mink. Research conducted at Tallinn Zoo revealed that stereotypic behaviour initially decreased during noise exposure, while the most significant drop in activity occurred in the days following the noise event. This indicates both immediate and delayed effects on the animals. The findings provide an important basis for future research aimed at the conservation of the species.

As part of the award, Aleksandra’s work will be featured in Fledgling Bytes, a BSAS publication aimed at highlighting early-career research. She will also be profiled on the BSAS website, in the official newsletter, and across their social media platforms.
