Uzair Aftab, a graduate of the Environmental Governance and Adaptation to Climate Change (ENGO) programme at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, made a career shift after more than 14 years in financial journalism and operational management. Today, he works at the university, contributing to communication and research in the environmental field.
His interest in environmental issues grew from both personal experiences in nature and global developments in sustainability and climate policy. When exploring study options, ENGO stood out for its strong academic quality, international perspective, and practical relevance.
“ENGO changed my life,” Uzair says. “It gave me the opportunity to transition into the environmental field while gaining the knowledge and skills needed to make a real impact.”
During his studies, Uzair gained valuable experience through field trips, real-life case studies, and exposure to current environmental challenges – from water treatment and waste management to climate change impacts in the Arctic region.
Today, he applies the skills he developed during his studies, such as communicating complex topics, academic writing, and understanding the social dimensions of environmental issues, in his daily work.
Uzair highlights the programme’s unique combination of science and policy, as well as its balance between flexibility and structure.
“It’s not just about data,” he notes. “You also need to understand the people affected.”
For prospective students, Uzair recommends taking the time to explore different options, but if the programme aligns with your goals, it offers a strong foundation for building a career in the environmental field.
