At the ceremonial reception dedicated to the 107th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, Minister of Regional Affairs and Agriculture Piret Hartman presented the ministry's service medals to individuals who have contributed to the well-being and development of agriculture and regional affairs. Among the 25 recipients were two members of the Estonian University of Life Sciences family.
Professor Mati Roasto from the Estonian University of Life Sciences’ Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences was the sole recipient of the Gold Service Medal. Just a few months ago, he was also recognized as Lecturer of the Year. His meticulous approach to organizing educational processes, dedication to his work, and willingness to support both students and colleagues are invaluable qualities.
He has excelled not only as an educator but also as a problem solver. On his own initiative, he has dedicated significant efforts to food security, food safety, and public health, creating numerous Estonian-language educational materials on these topics. His contributions have greatly enhanced the knowledge and competence of healthcare and food industry professionals, food handlers, and officials. Additionally, he has devoted much of his work and personal time to raising public awareness.
Under his leadership, the Food Hygiene Department has become one of the leading training providers at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, offering around 20 training courses. He has authored over 10 work guidelines and published more than 100 articles, along with developing extensive content for the website toiduteave.eelink opens in new page. All of this stems from his strong sense of mission and desire to improve the health and awareness of the Estonian people.
A total of 24 Silver Service Medals were awarded, one of which was presented to Kersti Kahu, a senior specialist at the Polli Horticultural Research Centre within the university’s Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Congratulations to Mati, Kersti, and all the other medal recipients!
