Rector Ülle Jaakma

Professor Ülle Jaakma (born October 1, 1957) graduated in biology from the University of Tartu.

She has been working at the Estonian University of Life Sciences since 1995. Over the course of her career, she has progressed through all academic positions—from specialist and junior researcher to full professor.

From 2005, Ülle Jaakma served as Professor (0.5 FTE) and Senior Researcher (0.5 FTE) at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. From 2013 to 2022, she held the position of Vice-Rector for Research at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

Positions and Achievements

Ülle Jaakma has held several leadership positions throughout her career. From 1997 to 2016, she served as Head of the Department of Reproductive Biology at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences (EMÜ). From 2005 to 2012, she was the Institute’s Director of Research; from 2008 to 2013, she led the doctoral study programme in Veterinary Medicine and Food Science at EMÜ; and from 2005 to 2010, she coordinated the EMÜ Doctoral School in Biomedicine and Biotechnology.

She was involved in preparing the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for its first international accreditation (2004), serving as the head of the working group that developed the action plan submitted to the government for the accreditation process. From 2009 to 2013, Ülle Jaakma was a member of the National Research Awards Committee of the Republic of Estonia, and from 2006 to 2012, she served on the Expert Committee of the Estonian Science Foundation.

She is Estonia’s representative to the governing body of the OECD research programme “Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems” and actively participates in COST networks and EU-funded research projects.

Awards and Honours

Professor Ülle Jaakma has received several scientific awards and professional recognitions.

  • Silver Decoration of Merit from the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture
  • Order of the White Star, 4th Class
  • National Research Award in Agricultural Sciences as a member of a research team
  • National Research Award of the Republic of Estonia for the development and implementation of embryo transfer technology, as a member of a research team
