Two evenings packed with exciting workshops and laboratory tours at the Estonian University of Life Sciences campus.

We welcome science enthusiasts of all ages on 23–24 September from 18–22!

Here is the Researchers’ Night programme of events held in English. Find an exciting workshop or laboratory tour to take part in. If you feel comfortable attending events in Estonian, you can view the full Researchers’ Night programme here.

Exhibition „Exciting Minds: Estonian Research Excellence Showcase – ERC Grants Across the Years“ 

The exhibition introduces European Research Council (ERC) grant recipients who are from Estonia or conduct their research in Estonia, along with their cutting-edge work. It highlights researchers and scientific ideas that push the boundaries of knowledge and have the potential to transform entire fields of research.

Events in Forestry House (Metsamaja) F. R. Kreutzwaldi 5 where where registration is not needed

Deep in the forest, a tall measurement tower listens to its surroundings around the clock. The forest breathes, warms and cools, absorbs and releases carbon. Air temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, airborne particles and other indicators reveal these subtle changes.

The measuring instruments translate the forest’s invisible rhythms into a continuous stream of data. But what does this data look like? And what does the place behind the numbers sound like?

An audiovisual installation transforms the measurement data into moving images across four screens, intertwines them with sounds recorded at the monitoring site, and transports visitors directly into the forest through a 3D reconstruction.

Step into the data and experience the forest from an entirely new perspective.

Advance registration is not required. Allow 5–20 minutes to experience the installation.

Did you know that a single drop of water can contain an entire miniature world? Estonia’s natural environment is home to a fascinating variety of microalgae. Researchers at the Estonian University of Life Sciences study their growth and conduct experiments to determine how different stress factors and nutrient levels affect their development.

Come and discover how microalgae are grown in the laboratory, what they feed on, and what these tiny organisms look like under a microscope.

The laboratory tour lasts approximately 15–20 minutes and is suitable for visitors of all ages.

Pre-registration is not required. Tours will run continuously throughout the event.

What does a leaf or seed look like when magnified more than 1,000 times? Come and discover the scanning electron microscope! Find out why it is used in science, how samples are prepared for examination, why electron microscope images are black and white, and what role pure gold plays in microscopy. See images of tiny objects that are difficult to notice with the naked eye.

Allow approximately 15–20 minutes for the demonstration. Suitable for visitors of all ages.

Come and explore the connection between human, animal and environmental health in an adventure-filled laboratory. Seven activity stations await you, where you can learn more about the spread of microbes and pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and how animal health affects humans.

Participants will receive a stamp in their One Health Passport after completing each task. Those who collect all seven stamps will be awarded a One Health Scientist certificate and a small surprise.

Science enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. A perfect experience for the whole family!

Location: Equine Clinic, F. R. Kreutzwaldi 62

Horses cannot tell us where it hurts. So how do veterinarians find out what is wrong with them? Visit the Equine Clinic at the Estonian University of Life Sciences and discover how modern X-ray and ultrasound examinations, together with clinical assessments, help solve complex medical cases.

During the one-hour tour, you will get a behind-the-scenes look at the clinic, meet the horses, and see how they are examined, treated and cared for.

The event will be held in English, with interpretation into Estonian.

Does sitting at a computer make you tired, or is your back starting to complain? Come and try an ergonomic workstation that allows you to work both sitting and standing.

You can also test different types of knee pads and try out how a wearable support device can help reduce physical strain.

Science meets excitement here! In this workshop, you will see chemistry come to life through colourful, glowing and explosive reactions that are both fun and educational.

Watch us create the Estonian flag using layers of liquids, turn clear water into drinks such as “milkshake” and “mango juice”, and unleash an energy bomb from a gummy bear! Witness glowing hearts, dancing flames and a genie bursting out of a bottle.

The experiments may seem like magic, but they are all based on real chemical reactions that help us understand how the world works. Get ready to explore, be amazed and fall in love with the wonders of chemistry!

Have you ever wondered what gives ponds and lakes their green colour? The answer often lies in microalgae – tiny organisms, many of which use sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, just like plants. Although microalgae are small, they hold remarkable potential!

Microalgae can transform waste and by-products into valuable products such as vitamins, proteins, natural pigments, polysaccharides, aquaculture feed and biofuels.

Come and discover how scientists cultivate and study these tiny green “factories”. You will see live microalgae cultures and learn about photobioreactors – illuminated systems in which microalgae are grown under controlled conditions using light, nutrients and CO₂.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who wants to see first-hand how science is helping to create a cleaner and smarter future.

We will introduce a filter that removes manganese from groundwater. Bring a sample of water from your well and test its manganese content! We will also talk about how we are developing particles that can be added to aviation fuels to reduce their carbon footprint, helping the aviation industry move towards its net-zero goal.

Come and discover how these tiny particles are helping us create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable world.
