At EMÜ Veterinary Clinic, our mission is to provide first-rate care for pets, farm animals, and horses using the latest advancements in veterinary medicine.

We offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to maintain and restore the health of animals, both large and small. We receive students only for the summer and autumn semester (from June to December).

The practical training courses

Eligibility Requirements

If you are interested in becoming a trainee at our Animal Clinics, please start with making sure that you are eligible for the training. It means that you need to be at least a 5th-year student and have accomplished all of the following courses or their equivalents:

  • Anatomy of domestic animals
  • Animal infectious diseases
  • Equine clinical medicine
  • Neurology
  • Obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Practical training in emergency medicine
  • Ruminant clinical medicine
  • Small animal internal medicine
  • Surgery
  • Swine clinical medicine
  • Veterinary clinical skills

Application Process

When applying, please note the specific windows of time during which exchange students are accepted for practical training:

  • Small Animal Clinic: June – December
  • Production Animal Clinic: August – December
  • Equine Clinic: June – December

We have an open application round, and the earlier a student applies, the higher their chances of securing a spot. Applications for the following summer/autumn are considered starting from October of the previous year.

Students should email us at [email protected] with the following details:

  • Full name
  • Gender
  • Email address
  • Name of home university
  • Year of study (5th or 6th year)
  • Preferred clinic
  • Desired time period

We will inform the student if there are available spots. If vacancies exist, the student will receive guidelines for submitting an online application.

Once the student submits their application, we will review it. If we can accept the student for a traineeship, we will ask them to prepare a Learning Agreement for Traineeships (download here).

To ensure you are well-prepared for practical work at the clinic, please read through the following information and attached files.

Guidelines from the Veterinary Clinic:

Important: Information on biosecurity, biosafety, and general safety guidelines is available on the homepage or in ÕIS under study materials. Students must read these guidelines beforehand. They will be discussed at the first meeting, and students must sign to confirm their understanding.

Clothing Requirements:

👕 Scrubs (available at the clinic)  

👞 Indoor shoes (Crocs-type) 

🥗 It is advisable to bring your lunch as there is no cafeteria in the building. Meals can be warmed up in the resting area, and there is no specific lunch time.

  • Lockers will be provided for personal belongings

👕 Two pairs of scrubs (available at the clinic)

👢 Rubber boots (sizes 38-42 available at the clinic)

Arrival Information: Work at the Small Animal Clinic (Kreutzwaldi 62, Tartu) starts at 8:00 am, in Production Animal and Equine Clinics at 8.30. The meeting point is at the registration office of the specific clinic.

Additional Requirements: Students are expected to keep a logbook (diary) during their traineeship.
