On February 19, the grand final gala of the "Science in 3 Minutes" competition took place at the Estonian Academy of Sciences, where five laureates were announced. Among them was Liis Lutter, a junior researcher at the Chair of Food Science and Technology at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
The President of the Academy of Sciences, Mart Saarma, emphasized the importance of popularizing science and explaining it in clear Estonian. "One of the most important duties of scientists is to serve the state and homeland. This means that we must be able to explain our work and research in a way that ordinary people can understand." He also highlighted that it is crucial for scientists to clarify scientific truths, as pseudoscientific messages are spreading more and more.
In addition to Liis Lutter, the four laureates included one researcher from the Estonian Academy of Arts, one from Tallinn University of Technology, and two from the University of Tartu.
Liis Lutter is a doctoral student in food science at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Her PhD research focuses on the microbial composition of industrial sourdough starters. Alongside her doctoral studies, she teaches general and food microbiology as well as product development to students. Additionally, she works as a development manager at the research institution BioCC OÜ, where she leads various projects related to food innovation.
Since her undergraduate studies, she has been actively promoting her field and science by conducting workshops for high school students. In her free time, Liis enjoys reading and exploring Estonia’s hiking trails.
During the final gala, Liis introduced the mysterious world of microbes through the example of sourdough starters. Watch her presentation HERElink opens in new page.
