On 1 April, the Estonian University of Life Sciences opened admissions to its doctoral programmes, offering prospective PhD candidates the opportunity to choose from a wide range of research topics that address pressing societal challenges — from climate change and artificial intelligence to animal health and sustainable agriculture.
Doctoral studies at the university typically last four years and represent the highest level of higher education. Completing the programme requires publishing scientific research and successfully defending a doctoral thesis, leading to the award of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.
A key element in applying for doctoral studies is selecting a research topic and supervisor. Topics are predefined and aligned with the university’s priority research areas, while close collaboration with the supervisor plays a crucial role in guiding the doctoral candidate’s research and development throughout the studies.
This year, five doctoral programmes are open: Environmental Sciences and Applied Biology, Forestry, Agricultural Sciences, Engineering Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine and Food Science. The range of topics reflects current scientific and societal challenges.
Doctoral studies are not limited to research alone — many doctoral candidates are also involved in teaching, supervising students, and participating in international collaboration. In many cases, doctoral studies are combined with employment as a junior researcher, providing stable income and social guarantees.
To apply, candidates must first select a suitable research topic and supervisor, then submit the required documents via the DreamApply systemlink opens in new page, and confirm their place after receiving an admission offer. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
The Estonian University of Life Sciences invites all interested candidates to contribute to research and innovation and help shape a sustainable future in Estonia and beyond.
