On 14 April, the Council of the EuroLeague of Life Sciences Universities (ELLS) met at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The meeting was attended primarily by the rectors of partner universities, accompanied by their respective vice-rectors. All European partner universities were represented, and colleagues from Lincoln University in New Zealand and the University of Jerusalem (HUJI).
The meeting focused on the potential expansion of the network, its strategic future, role, and relationships with other similar organisations such as ICA link opens in new pageand EBUlink opens in new page, of which most ELLS partners are also members. It was jointly concluded that ELLS aims to position itself more as a European university rather than an open network. Consequently, there are no plans for expansion in the coming years; instead, the focus will be on deepening cooperation among existing partners and achieving shared goals in both education and research.
It was also agreed that ELLS does not have a direct role in policymaking. However, participants emphasised the importance of highlighting the role of food and sustainable agriculture in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector. To influence policymaking, it was considered more effective to engage through larger and more influential networks, such as ICA.
The discussion was summarised by Christoph Schneider, Rector of the University of Hohenheim, who stressed that the goal of food security should be to ensure peace, not to use food as a weapon. Ultimately, students are at the heart of all cooperation, as these efforts are carried out for their benefit.
Students and staff also had the opportunity to meet with vice-rectors from partner universities to discuss study and collaboration opportunities.
