The Estonian University of Life Sciences began the new academic year today with a festive opening ceremony held in front of the university’s sports hall. In her speech, Rector Ülle Jaakma stated that many exciting things lie ahead.
“This is a new chapter in every student’s learning journey and personal development, but it also reminds us of the importance of education in Estonian society as a whole. This day reminds us that knowledge and wisdom have brought us freedom, our own country, and will remain the foundation of our success in the future,” said Jaakma.
According to the Rector, our shared future depends on how wisely we are able to use technology: “Your tools will include artificial intelligence, robots, and digital solutions, but it is you who will decide how to use them wisely. Your decisions will shape what our shared future will look like. Technology is advancing rapidly, but human intellect and sense of responsibility must evolve alongside it.”
In addition to the Rector, the event featured welcome speeches by Vice-Rector for Studies Professor Endla Reintam, Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas, Student Union President Georg Kaasik, Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas and Chair of the Alumni Association Board Argo Normak.
The university’s chamber choir, Camerata Universitatis, conducted by Seidi Mutso, contributed to the festive atmosphere.
Following tradition, the Rector presented the university’s cap to the top new entrants in the first-cycle (bachelor’s level) study programmes.
This year, over 1,000 students are beginning their studies in bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programmes, including nearly 650 first-year students. In total, the university has 3,120 students.
