From 16–20 March, the Estonian University of Life Sciences will host Green University Week, inviting the university community and the wider public to reflect on environmentally sustainable topics.
At the same time, sustainability-focused events will also take place at other universities across Estonia. Throughout the week, events will explore sustainability from a wide range of perspectives. On Monday, 16 March, a film evening will be held in cooperation between the University of Tartu and the Estonian University of Life Sciences, featuring the film “Kriimsilm, the Bear, and the Fox.” After the screening, researchers from the universities will take part in a discussion titled “Who Needs Nature Conservation?”
The largest event of Green University Week is the conference “Sustainable City, Campus and Mobility,” taking place on Tuesday, 17 March. The focus is on the connections between the university campus and the urban space, and how the planning of public space supports sustainable mobility, biodiversity, and environmentally conscious choices in everyday life. “As a research institution, a university contributes to society through the creation of new knowledge, thereby supporting societal development. At this year’s conference, we will discuss how our outdoor space influences the choices of people moving around the campus, and how we can shape it so that decisions become more sustainable,” said Sille Rebane, Green University Strategy Manager at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
The Green Week programmelink opens in new page at the Estonian University of Life Sciences also includes a training session focused on how to guide people’s behaviour towards greater environmental awareness. As part of Career Fair, doctoral student and zero-waste expert Kristiina Kerge will share her career path in the sustainability sector. On Friday, interested participants can visit the A. Le Coq brewery to learn about the company’s sustainability principles and hear more about the beverage producer’s cooperation with the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
The Green University initiative, established in 2008, engages all staff and students of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Its aim is to create a healthy learning and working environment with as small an ecological footprint as possible, while integrating the principles of sustainable development into all areas of activity.
Everyone interested is welcome to attend the Green University Week events. Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is required.
