Estonian University of Life Sciences completes action plan to reduce its carbon footprint

05.11.2026

The Estonian University of Life Sciences has completed its Action Plan for Carbon Footprint Reduction and Resource Efficiency 2026+, which sets out measures to reduce the university’s carbon footprint and improve the efficient use of energy, materials and space. The action plan covers several areas of everyday university operations, from renewable energy use to environmentally friendly transport.

The Estonian University of Life Sciences has been systematically measuring its carbon footprint since 2022. These measurements have helped identify the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions and areas where the university can reduce its carbon footprint. The new action plan builds on the data collected and the experience gained from implementing the Green University Strategy, while supporting the objectives of the university’s development plan.

The aim of the action plan is to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the university’s operations and improve resource efficiency. The focus is therefore not only on reducing carbon emissions but also on making more considered use of energy, materials and space.

According to Sille Rebane, Green University Strategy Manager at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, the action plan focuses primarily on practical measures that help integrate environmental sustainability into everyday operations.

"For me, it is important that environmental responsibility is reflected in our everyday decisions: how we use energy and space, what we purchase and how we travel. I believe that developing this action plan has given us a shared understanding of the first steps we need to take. The next priority is to put these measures into practice, monitor our progress and build on the experience we gain," said Rebane.

The action plan covers energy use, resource efficiency and sustainable transport

One of the key priorities is to increase the use of renewable energy and improve the energy efficiency of university buildings. According to the action plan, solar panels are scheduled to be installed on the Forestry Building and Sports Building in 2026, followed by the Food Science Building in 2027. Plans also include installing meters and automation systems to enable more accurate monitoring of energy consumption, as well as conducting an energy audit. The results will provide a basis for planning further energy efficiency improvements.

To improve resource efficiency, the action plan proposes changes to procurement practices, including the possibility of choosing refurbished IT equipment instead of purchasing new devices. The university also plans to assess office paper consumption and opportunities for more efficient use of space, as well as provide employees with recommendations for reducing paper waste and digital waste.

Encouraging more environmentally friendly modes of transport is another important priority. The action plan includes installing electric vehicle charging stations near academic buildings, improving conditions for cycling and walking, and informing employees about sustainable transport options. In addition, the university plans to review its parking arrangements and develop bicycle-sharing opportunities on campus.

Progress on the action plan will be reviewed annually

The action plan focuses on practical measures, with designated responsibilities and deadlines for implementation. In several areas, the first step will be to assess the current situation and evaluate potential solutions to ensure that future decisions are well-founded and take into account the university’s needs and resources. As a result, not all planned measures may initially lead to directly measurable reductions in the carbon footprint or improvements in resource efficiency.

The action plan was developed by the Estonian University of Life Sciences' Green University Working Group, with input from other stakeholders where necessary. Responsibility for implementing the measures lies with the employees and units designated in the plan.

The Green University Working Group will review progress on the action plan at least once a year in April, and the plan will be updated at least once a year in May. This will allow measures to be adjusted based on the results achieved and emerging needs.

The current action plan and a summary of its implementation progress will be made publicly available on the Green University webpage.
