Professor Haldja Viinalass of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences at the Estonian University of Life Sciences has received the 2026 Distinguished Service Award from the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP). The award was presented to her on 7 September at the 77th EAAP Annual Meeting in Hamburg, Germany.
The exhibition “Exciting Minds: Estonian Research Excellence Showcase – ERC Grants Across the Years” is now on display at Forestry Building of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. It showcases European Research Council (ERC) grant recipients who are either from Estonia or conducting their research in Estonia, along with their research. The exhibition will officially open on 23 September.
On Wednesday, 9 September, Michael Oliewo Aluma defended his doctoral thesis at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Entitled “Monitoring invasive crayfish in Estonian freshwaters: distribution patterns and eDNA-based surveillance for noble crayfish (Astacus astacus L.) conservation”.
On Monday, August 31st, Toomas Tarmu defended his doctoral thesis, “Technological and methodological innovations in Estonian forest management: sonic tomography and dominant height modelling”, at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The thesis focused on opportunities to assess forest growth and tree condition more accurately than before.
The Estonian University of Life Sciences will start the new academic year with an opening ceremony on 1 September at 12:00 in the outdoor area in front of the university’s Sports Hall (F. R. Kreutzwaldi 3).
Although the new academic year at the Estonian University of Life Sciences officially begins with the opening ceremony on 1 September, new students are already on campus. FOXFEST, an orientation festival that began on 27 August, helps first-year students get to know their fellow students, the university campus and student life.
